Coach Kevin

About Me

I am Coach Kevin; a highly decorated American athlete born on St. Thomas U.S. Virgin Islands. I ran my first race in the 4th grade finishing 7th out of 8th runners. I felt defeated and sad that I lost. Throughout the next few years I would run against my cousin in the streets losing every time by a very close margin. It wasn’t until I one day I actually beat him, is when I figured out that I had this don’t quite attitude. I then joined the track team in high school as a sophomore.

I was in Art class just talking about sports in general and I was asked what I like to do, and I said “Run”. At this time this classmate told me that I should join the track team. I wasn’t aware that they had a track team, so I went out one day and joined.

During my first year on the track team I was the second fastest. Like I said earlier I had this, “don’t quit attitude” so by the end of the year I became the fastest and never looked back.

I left high school as the fastest Athlete and was going head-to-head with another high school athlete at the rival high school whereas he and I were exchanging victories in different events. At this time my rival high school coach recognized my achievements and offered to help me get a scholarship. He said that I was good enough to get one. In my junior year I helped my high school to win the first ever high school championship in school history over the rival school. My senior year my high school coach went back to Virginia. This was a coach that also help to shape me into not just a great athlete but I great gentleman. He exposed me to the state life by having myself and my teammate’s student exchange in Virginia. He also thought myself about looking a person in their eyes as I shake their hand firmly. I then was had a new coach for my senior year that was young and competed at the college level at Northeast Louisiana University.

Due to this coach's involvement, he was able to connect me with a scholarship to the University of Arkansas-Monticello, where I graduated in 1994 with a major in Psychology and a minor in Biology. While I was in high school I won several medal, trophies, and MVP award. I was invited to an invitational meet at the Florida Relays where only a selective few competed in. I placed 2nd overall. Here is where I felt I really had the talent to go far.

My first year in college I was running in the snow (first experience) and one time got ran off the road by a truck with a confederate flag. Before this time, I was clueless to racism. This was my first experience. I ran indoors from then on, but not being used it, I false started in my next race and had to sit out the remainder of the track meet.

That moment, I turned my defeat into triumph and motivation by becoming the best starter on the team. I also ran a race against the fastest and best athlete my first year and when I was leading the 200m race he pushed me in the grass and he won the race. I was good enough to be on the relay team and earned All AIC and All American awards. Each summer going back to the islands I was named MVP earning $2,000 each year. I also was added to the Virgin Islands National team and earned bronze medal in the 4x100m relay at the 1991 Pan American Games.

After college I went back to coach my high school, I helped them gain their second championship in the school's history. I was named Coach of the Year. I was also named as a Coach for the National Youth team (CARIFTA). Through this time I was able to assist 3 runners gain scholarships on the mainland. Here is where I learn that track is all mental and it was a challenge for me to mold young minds in the sport of track and field. I felt that once I can educate and correct their mindset, I feel I have accomplished a lot. The physical for me is more secondary and this is how my philosophy of coaching has always been…

Educating and teaching a strong mind first, then the physical will be more effective.

I moved to Atlanta Georgia back in December 1998 after my brother encouraged me to try it out and if not for me I can go back to the islands. Here is where I was able to reach different heights by exposing my gift and perfecting my talent. I joined Speed Dynamics Atlanta, being coached by world renowned coaches like Loren Seagrave and Paul Doyle. I competed and trained with Olympic athletes from other countries. I competed in several track meets earning more medals. I then decided to help the next generations of athletes in track and field as I started to coach high school student athletes in 2003.

In 2014 I decided I need to do more, so I created my own track club called Nation of Speed.

I have been awarded over 200 medals and 100 trophies due to my placements in competitions.

Every time I lose a race it motivates me to run the next race, thinking that, that day was just a bad race and I can do better.

Now, I am here, with the help of Team Moms, Volunteer Coaches and Committed Athletes, ready to replicate myself in the next generation.
